Queenstown Lakes District Council advises that Hawea residents need no longer boil their drinking water.

Samples of treated water in the reticulated supply have been clear of e-coli for the last three days. Because e-coli is still being detected in the daily samples of untreated lake water, chlorination will continue in the meantime as a precaution. The decision will be reviewed early next week.

The taste of chlorine in tap water can be reduced by filling a glass jug or bowl with water, covering it and refrigerating. Alternatively, boil the water for five minutes, cool and refrigerate. Boiling the water will remove most of the chlorine.
